What is Coir?

Coir is made from the natural husk of the coconut.  The husk is the exterior rough water-resistant fibre on the outside of the shell.  The coconut is a versatile product that has no wastage and has become a sought-after commodity.

The Coconut

Food, confectionary and cosmetic industries worldwide have utilised the coconut’s sweet interior ingredient, where the liquid milk and white meat are found.  Valued for its nutritional health benefits, numerous food by-products have been created and marketed for the smell and the sweet flavour enjoyed by our taste buds.  The pleasant coconut smell has also been adopted by the cosmetic industry to promote coconut by-products to benefit skin elasticity and improved hair condition.

The environmentally friendly outer husk fibre has also been recognised for its natural strength and nutritional value within the manufacturing and horticultural industries.  By-products produced within these industries include coir mats, construction boards, coir rope and brushes to name but a few.

For the keen gardener, many compost products now include the nutritional outer shell to enrich potting soil and moisture retaining shredded garden chips for use around planting and flower beds.

The Coir Mat

Focusing on one of the husk by-products, the coir floor mat is a popular and traditional hard-wearing product usually found at the entrance to a door way in both the commercial and domestic environment.

Produced from 100% natural husk fibres, the natural coarse coir is designed for use as a practical scraper brush ideal for removing dirt, dust and moisture from footwear and wheels and is suitable for commercial floor areas that are subject to a heavy footfall.

Coir mats are a popular matting choice and are available in 8 colours.  They are produced using a heavy-duty PVC backing and manufactured either in the classic monotone colour or with a creative logo design.  To produce the logo mat, the approved design is physically inlaid into the base coir mat.

8 Coir colours are available:

Natural

Red

Russet

Blue

Black

Brown

Grey

Green

The majority of coir mats are usually fitted into a matwell or recessed floor area because of their 17mm standard height.  If the mat is to be loose laid on the floor, there is the additional option of a robust ramped rubber border available.

Mats that are placed in a matwell, it is recommended that the recessed area’s width and length is measured in ‘mm’ for an accurate measurement.  The mat would be produced slightly larger than the actual matwell size to allow for cutting and an accurate fit.  It is also recommended to request the services of a local carpet fitter to cut and fit the mat.
